Hello UW team member!

Developing your career at UW is something we feel passionately about so we’re delighted that you’re exploring opportunities across the business.

If you’re interested in the below role, please ensure you’ve reviewed our internal application criteria and spoken to your line manager.

Please note we require you to meet the qualification/experience requirements below to be considered for this role.

We put people first. It’s all about you.

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer who acts as a prolific contributor and a technical leader. You should be someone who mentors senior team members, provides context over instruction, and leads by example to foster a culture of quality.

Your technical toolkit should include:

  • Expert knowledge of Go, gRPC, GraphQL, Postgres, and Kafka.

  • Deep experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform.

  • Proficiency in CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions and ArgoCD.

  • A track record of improving stability, performance, and scalability in business-critical systems.

  • The ability to make the complex simple and communicate a long-term technical vision.

We work together. Your team and the people you will work with…

Energy is at the heart of UW, with over 95% of our customers taking at least one Energy service. You’ll join our Energy team - the driving force behind our Energy Transformation and Market Wide Half Hourly Settlement. These high-impact projects lay the foundation for the next phase of UW. You will provide technical direction to other engineers within your pillar, ensuring that multiple team goals align with our broader strategy.

We deliver progress. What you’ll do and how you will make an impact.

As a Staff Engineer, you will amplify team effectiveness by driving technical excellence and consistency across the organisation. You won’t just write code; you will define “what good looks like”.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Establishing engineering standards and principles within your domain.

  • Solving complex technical problems across teams and influencing long-term strategy.

  • Driving prioritisation to ensure squads deliver on critical pillar goals.

  • Rolling out strategic operational and security improvements across multiple squads.

  • Setting and achieving appropriate SLOs and SLAs and acting as a point for critical incident escalation.

  • Leading discovery into unknowns and cutting through the noise on large-scale projects.
